The College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry is the specialty organization that represents Board Certified Pediatric Dentists in their on-going and life-long pursuit of “excellence in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry”. The objectives of the College of Diplomates of the ABPD are to:
• Encourage the advancement of the science and practice of pediatric dentistry through mutual expert cooperation and study of topic areas critical to the quality oral health care of children.
• Promote fellowship and collegiality among active Diplomates of the College through the provision of quality continuing education and networking opportunities.
• Provide a source of effective representation for those individuals who are already Board Certified within the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry.
• Support the objectives of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
• Encourage and mentor aspiring pediatric dentist candidates in the ABPD process.
Beyond networking opportunities available to members through our interactive website, the venues for enhancing the educational activities of COD members are our annual C.E. Symposium, our annual Fall Study Club C.E. Series, and our annual Spring Study Club: Renewal of Sedation Certification (SimMan) with PALS Recertification Course. All of these programs are made possible by the generous support of the Foundation of the College of Diplomates of The American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Recent Annual Foundation C.E. Symposium lectures, held in conjunction with our annual business meeting at the May meeting of the AAPD, have included lectures from recognized medical experts on obesity in children, management of children with ADHD and OCD disorders, the use of NAM in cleft lip and palate patients, pediatric cardiology, and the anthropologic perils of being bipedal. The 2016 Foundation C.E. Symposium in San Antonio will address the escalating problem of substance abuse on oral and general health.
The popular COD Fall Study Club series provides a unique opportunity for Diplomates to learn in a small group format. Led by recognized experts addressing targeted topics critical to maintaining excellence in the specialty, these programs are held in October at resort-type locales. Past seminars have been led by Dr. Suzi Seale on contemporary approaches to pulp therapy (2009 - Charleston, SC), Dr. Dennis McTigue on management of traumatic injuries (2010 - Sonoma, CA), Dr. Ron Bell on orthodontic management of the developing occlusion (2011 - Newberg, OR), Dr. Bill Waggoner on esthetic restorations for pediatric patients (2012 - Cabo San Lucas, Mexico), Dr. Martha Ann Keels on ”Eureka Moments in Pediatric Dentistry” (2013 Sarasota, FL), Dr. Joel Berg on “The Continuum of Caries Management” (2014 – Newberg, OR) and Dr. Juan Yepes on Oral Medicine and Oral Radiology (2015, New Orleans). The 2016 Fall Study Club will be held at the Inn and Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe, NM October 20-22, with Dr. Nestor Cohenca speaking on Dental Trauma and Treatment Advances including Regenerative Endodontics and Decoronation. Lectures are held in the mornings with afternoons free for relaxation and networking opportunities.
Our COD Spring Study Club is a Renewal of Sedation Certification Course that combines lecture and SimMan components appropriate to the expert level of a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. The course faculty includes Dr. David Rothman and Dr. Gerry Ferretti. This Diplomate only, small group attendance course will be offered again this April 15-17, 2016 in Cleveland with PALS recertification, and is designed for members to fulfill their state sedation CE requirements. Future programs are being planned for different locations.
With mentoring and education as primary objectives, one of our goals is to identify and meet the needs of our newest Diplomate members. To that end, we include a "New Diplomate Representative” on our Board of Directors as well as a "New Diplomate Committee” that seeks input from newer members on how the organization can best meet their needs. In similar fashion, the COD looks forward to better serving all of our members, improving collegiality, communication and networking among our members, and fulfilling our mission “to encourage and promote the pursuit of excellence in pediatric dentistry”.
We hope you will make time in your busy schedule to join your colleagues each year at our Annual Meeting and Symposium in May and then to relax and recharge at our small group Study Clubs each Fall and Spring. We realize you have many choices for continuing education, but hope you will consider the unique level of collegiality and opportunity for life-long learning offered by the College of Diplomates.
